It’s all in a name…

New Businesses are finding that when they go to register a business name all the names they wanted have been taken.  Don’t get discouraged, there are plenty of high impact names still available.  Just think a little bit creatively and outside the square.

Separate state or territory services have now been replaced by a new online national business name registration service, which is administered by ASIC (Australian Securities and Investment Commission).

It is compulsory to register a business name before you commence trading.

  • Here are some hints to consider when choosing a business name:
  • How well does your business name describe what you do?
  • How well does your business name make you stand out from your competition?
  • How easy will it be for your customers to find you?
  • How easy is it to spell?  This will help people trying to find you on the internet and on Facebook.
  • How easy is it to remember?

Here’s a little activity that helps our clients find a unique business name that stands out.

Select all the individual words that reflect you, your business and what you can offer to your customers.  Write each word on a sticky note and place them on the wall. Move them around and try different combinations until you get the one that best reflects your business.   If it’s already registered work through the process again, it may take some patience but once you have your unique name you are ready to move to the next stage of your business planning.

Registering a business name, company name or domain name does not give you ownership of that name.  A trademark is required to give you that type of protection. A registered trademark can be a word, number, letter, logo, phrase, picture, sound, smell, shape, type of packaging or combination of all of these. As a registered owner of a trademark you have the exclusive right to use that trademark throughout Australia.  Trademarks are administered by IP Australia which is a federal government agency.

A domain name is a unique internet address, kind of like a street address, and ideally it should contain all or part of your business name making it easier for your customers to find you.
